Fundraising Quilt
The Grateful Threads 2020 quilt fundraiser will benefit Connection First, which is a worthy cause in line with restorative justice.
Connection First, Inc. is a Tallahassee nonprofit working to stop the cycle of trauma and violence. Restorative justice is promoted as an alternative to jailing troubled teens. Connection First, Inc. is the non-profit that oversees restorative justice programs for Tallahassee teens who are at risk. Restorative justice provides an approach for teaching empathy and conflict resolution using specific communication techniques known as Nonviolent Communication. The specific practices of restorative justice promote healing from trauma and violence, attempting to break the trauma/violence cycle. The recidivism rate for graduates of the parent program, Community Connections, is only 12% compared to a national rate of 70-80%. The program is so impactful that 30% of the program graduates choose to become volunteers to help mentor new program participants.
Selecting volunteers to become interns would provide stability for the expansion of the program. The interns would continue to come to the twice-weekly program, held at the Palmer Monroe Community Center. They would help the new students in the program practice Nonviolent Communication skills, and they would serve as successful role models. Many of the interns come from financially-poor circumstances so funding is needed to provide compensation for their leadership role. 100% of the money from this fundraiser will go to the Connection First, Inc. intern fund.
