The teaching and nurture of our children and youth is a priority for the United Church of Tallahassee.
Through Sunday School classes which utilize an excellent lectionary-based curriculum called “Living the Good News”, young people learn to read and understand the Bible, and apply it to their lives.
We have an experienced caregiver attend the nursery for infants and toddlers during Sunday School classes and worship.
Youth
In addition to Sunday School classes for youth, there is an active parent led group which plans and organizes social service and personal growth activities.
The UCT Youth Program serves Middle School age youth, grades 5th - 7th, and High School age youth, grades 8th - 12th. A Youth Leader is on staff to work with the youth and with teams of adult volunteers.
The groups participate separately and together in a variety of recreational events and service projects. Through youth activities, young people learn cooperation and sound values for living, growing up and making decisions. We believe that engaging young people in service projects is another way to teach them that being Christian also means serving others.
Dates and times for youth events are posted in the Gatherings newsletter, youth bulletin board, weekly bulletin, and church calendar.
A Confirmation program is offered periodically to prepare young people for full adult membership and faith commitment.
Children
Our church is small enough to have an extended family feeling, and is growing large enough to offer a full range of age-appropriate classes and events for children. Worship is very “kid-friendly,” and active youngsters are warmly received by the congregation.
9am Sunday School classes offer a “One Room School House” type model.
11am Sunday School classes are divided into Nursery/Toddler, Primary (Pre-k - 2nd grade), Intermediate (3rd - 5th grade), and Youth/Teen (6th - 12th grade).
Children are also involved in many intergenerational activities, from worship to service and fellowship events. Young voices often share “joys and thanksgivings” during the worship service, and from time to time, children will sing or provide other leadership in the services. Our monthly preparation of a meal for The Shelter is an occasion for older children to help cook and serve food for homeless people.
