Community Action

Community Action Mission Statement Ways to Serve

The United Church in Tallahassee, as part of its founding vision, was conceived to become a congregation of the United Church of Christ (UCC) in the capital of Florida, where decisions are made that affect the quality of life for Floridians. We honor this legacy through our continued involvement in issues of social justice and concern.

UCT is a Bread for the World Covenant Church. Bread for the World is an ecumenical organization committed to education about world hunger issues, which offers training and support for local action by congregations to alleviate hunger. In keeping with this covenant, UCT participates in an annual Offering of Letters on national hunger legislation.

Members also bring canned and non-perishable food on the first Sunday of each month, (Food First) to supply a local food bank. On the third Sunday of each month, we prepare and deliver a hot meal to the Shelter, Tallahassee’s shelter for the homeless.

At Christmas, the congregation has a Giving Tree to gather presents for local families, or for other individuals in need of attention at this time of the year.

On weekends you will often find UCT volunteers building ramps or putting up handrails to help provide accessibility for low-income neighbors throughout Tallahassee.

Open and Affirming (ONA)

UCT is one of more than 330 United Church of Christ congregations that are an Open and Affirming (ONA) Congregation, welcoming all persons regardless of sexual orientation. In time of great controversy over issues of sexuality in church and society, the United Church of Christ has provided critical leadership in the religious community for justice for gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. UCT has provided such leadership and support in Tallahassee.

Our annual budget includes contributions to Bread for the World and the United Church Coalition for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Concerns.

We are also members of Florida IMPACT, an interfaith legislative advocacy group which focuses particularly on the concerns of the poor, women and children, and migrant workers. The Community Action Committee also responds to requests for support from other organizations.

We welcome the interests, support and ideas of our members as we seek to live out our faith in the community.
