Darnel vs Wheat; Kudzu vs Cotton; Wolves vs Sheep; Them vs Us . . .
‘The worst evils in the world are not done by evil people, but by good people who do not know they are not doing good.” - Reinhold Niebuhr
Thanks so much, Bill, for an enlightening & engaging message! The Civil Rights Era Historian, Taylor Branch, paraphases that 20th Century Theological “Rock Star” R. Niebuhr: that good & evil do exist: but, that it is oft so frequently challenging for the individual, to acurately discern how to categorize Good & Evil’s individualized referents. As St. Paul said, “we see a dim (epistomological!) reflection, in a mirror . .” I earn my daily bread in human services. When I’m tempted to lick my physical/emotional wounds, I (re)read a quote I keep to my avail: “The opposite of Good is not Evil, it is Indifference.” - Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel & Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Strength it lends me & reminds me that Real Evil lays imbedded in Institutionalized Structures, enabling individuals to remain indifferent to myriad injustices that may surround. Let each of us, therefore, continue to “work our fields” & reserve any final Word(s)” to rest with the landLord.
